We are going to begin a full reassessment of all breeds against the KI framework. However, because of the increased amount of work being done in breed health, and the limited resources we have, this will be done in a phased process.

Phase one will take 22 breeds and review those using the existing methodology, in effect, a pilot. This will give us a good indication of how much work is now involved, and we will be able to set out a timeframe for the full assessment.

The 22 breeds chosen include breeds from all groups, plus two popular crosses. They range from some of our most popular breeds to those with very low numbers. They include some breeds with current controversial health issues such as the Cavalier King Charles spaniel, and a representation from brachycephalics. This list also includes breeds that scored well on previous indexes and some with low scores.

Each assessment will be done as constructively and as collaboratively as is feasible in light of current resource constraints.

The list is as follows

Basset Hound

Bearded Collie

Bernese Mountain Dog

Border Terrier

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

"Cockapoo" cross

Dachshund

English Springer Spaniel

Flatcoated Retriever

French Bulldog

Glen of Imaal

Great Dane

Irish Wolfhound

"Labradoodle" cross

Labrador

Lancashire heeler

Miniature Schnauzer

Newfoundland

Picardy Sheepdog

Pug

West Highland White Terrier

Yorkshire Terrier

Any queries please contact us, the email can be found on our website.

We are very much looking forward to exploring how health is now being managed within each of these breed communities. Working with breed health champions is, and has always been the most rewarding aspect of this project.

The report for Phase One, that will include the findings for each of the breeds listed above, is scheduled to be available on 7th July 2017.
